This tutorial for is the first of the series to show you how to create a landscape made from hexagonal prisms.
This part covers modeling and scene setup (such as world settings and lighting).
Interesting. I do have a question, after you added the displacement modifier there seemed to be some faces that got really stretched out of shape, giving the appearance of some of the columns melting or something. What caused that and is there a way to fix it? you can really see what I'm referring to @7:49
I know what you're talking about - it's the under lying plane we used as a base poking through - we get rid of that in the materials part I'll make by giving the plane a transparent material
Actually no, I saw it in an old official Blender Splash (2.3x something I think) - it's a fairly common thing, there are even brilliant artists (like Ryan Bliss) that have done this
True, but that would serve no good purpose, only add to the poly count unnecessarily due to the fact that you don't even see the bottom of the hexagons ever
Thanks Greg for that, since i'm a newbee in Blender it's very useful, You speak nicely, having good sound level, interesting infos and it's good to see the key you're stroking in the screen. The final result picture look great!
Hi! I'm pretty sure you forgot to mention that we need to enable blend sky in the world pannel. =P Without it, the texture applied to the mist won't work.
Also, I wanted to add that for animation, you could set the texture coordinates of the displatement modifier to and empty and move or scale that said empty. I would give you nice results.
This was an awesome tutorial and I'm pretty happy of what I have learned watching it. Thanks for posting.
Hey Greg...Your tutorials are Great..i have only one thing to ask...while using short cut keys..please give some time and explaination.... Your tuts are best for newbees like us....
i used a similar technique to do this, except instead of using audio, i used video... but if You have an app with an audio visualizer, and can capture it to video, i think You can get better control of the final topology... going from audio to f-curves is very limited... but going from video, to topology is extremely flexible -- especially since You can further process the video in blender to control, contrast, shape, etc... here's the Youtube vid identifier... Hey Greg, a big thank for this very nice tuto, like the other ones. However I have one question, if I want to dissociate each elements done via this fonction. For instance if I want to change the color of few of them, to put one in blue one in yellow etc.... How can I do? Hope you'll understand my question as I'm not english native. Cheers Guillaume

Sorry, I found the way to do it (for the one who have same question Ctrl+Shift+A). Thanks again. Guillaume
Interesting, I'm already imagining many uses for these techniques. Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks

saw this at the splash contest din't you. I saw your windmill, it was so nice

I am very interested in that techniques. Thx
Very interesting.
Thanks.
you van also fill the faces on the bottom

Mmm... Giant's Causeway meets CGI :)

Thanks man!

Anyone ever notice the small hexagonal landscape in the movie How To Train Your Dragon?
I did :D

You could add links to next parts of tutorial on the bottom of this...
